NOTE FROM THE COMPOSER
The astral plane is described as a “non-physical” realm of being, separate from the physical one but accessible from it by means of one's astral body. Into the Astral Plane depicts a journey through the space in one’s mind, focusing on three distinct characters throughout its duration. Character A, presented at the beginning of the piece, focuses on a 2-note idea presented in the oboe that is a precursor to a later, expanded melody. I wanted this character to be a depiction of everything wonderful, fantastic, and imaginative about the astral plane and its connections with space and stars. Character B features a lighter, more adventure-esc melody in the flutes contrasted with a heroic line in the brass section. This serves as a state of “movement” in
the piece, akin to adventure film scores. If character B is a state of movement, then character C would be described as a state of “pause” and reflection. This character explores a new harmonic language which switches back and forth between major and Phyrgian, giving a sense of uncertainty. The piece then repeats character B and A with slight alterations, ultimately coming to a close.
As I was writing this piece, my aim was to create an homage to the many musical qualities found within the film scores of today’s age. From sweeping gestures to fast-paced ostinatos, my goal was to recreate the experience of cinema for the concert stage.
